DIY Betsey Johnson “Box of Chocolates” Purse
I love, love, love Betsey Johnson, but one of her bags - even on sale - is a splurge for me. I saw one of her purses that looked like a Box of Chocolates for Valentine’s Day, and I was obsessed - but not as much with the price. I actually think mine came out better (not to toot my own horn or anything) - and it cost a third of Betsey’s - even at half off.
Create Your Own Betsey Box of Chocolates Purse for Under $20
Here’s the inspiration (Betsey’s version), which was originally over $100 and is still almost $80, even on sale.
When I decided I wanted to create my own, I did a quick search - just “heart purses” - and was honestly shocked to find one at Target for Cat & Jack (which is for children) - called the “Girls’ Heart Crossbody Bag.” It was only $14 - and then I got a faux-flower from Target as well.
The flower costs $5.99 (but it’s on sale right now for $4.19), and it’s called “Ranunculus Artificial Light Pink” flower.
When I was at the Dollar Tree yesterday though, I realized that they have all of those faux flowers out front for under $2 too.
I simply wanted to attach the flowers to the purse to recreate that “Box of Chocolates” look.
Since the flower stems have metal, I used strong pliers to cut the flowers off at the very base. Then I used a hot glue gun to adhere the flowers in the upper right corner.
It came out a lot better than I thought it would, and it only cost $20. I love, love, love Betsey - but my DIY version is a fifth of her bag’s original price. That’s just bananas!
You could do this with any heart shaped bag and faux flowers of your finding. I personally liked the way the pink trim was brought out by the flowers, so I didn’t want to add any ruffles to the edges, but you certainly could.
I am in ZERO way affiliated with Betsey Johnson, Target, or the Dollar Tree.
I love this project because heart totes and fake flowers are so common, anyone could do their own version of a “Box of Chocolates” Purse.
One thing I could not recreate but warrants a moment for admiration is the back of Betsey’s version:
It’s what’s inside that counts.
